Hi,

My name is Ken, I am glad to have you guys here, my fateher was diagnosed Renal Cell Carcinoma stage 4, it changed my life and my family forever. I built up this website to record my father’s kidney cancer and share information about kidney cancer, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, staging, diet & nutrition, treatment and prognosis, and also other related topics such as qigong, traditional Chinese medicine, etc. I hope this site can help all the people whose life has been touched by kidney cancer. And most importantly, we need you to share your experiences with us, with all kidney cancer patients and caregivers.

Much love from Ken

Hi Ken, thank you for doing this! I was diagnosed with stage 4 rcc November 2008, had the bad kidney taken out in december, and 2 rounds of hi dose IL2 in Feb 2009, resulting in a partial response. The IL2 seemed to buy me around 4 months of really feeling great,,with one scan coming back “no change”.
Unfortunately a recent scan showed some small growth of the lymph node and lung problem areas, and it went to my 11th disc in my spine. I finish my 10 doses of radiation for that this wednesday 9-15-09, and will start sudent a week or so later. I’m 49,,and most of the time I keep a positive attitude. All of you keep a positive attitude!! I know it’s tough to do on the days when the pain is worst, you are the most tired, but hang in there as long as you can, they are coming up with more and more ways to help, and you never know! Take that 15 minute walk outside every day, if you can. God bless, Bryan

@Bryan, Hi Bryan, I’m sorry to hear about your “no change”, but for cancer, “no change” is not a bad news. my father was diagnosed kidney cacner stage4 this May, and took IL-2 and Sutent as a combination for a month, but I think that was a fatal mistake, IL-2 and Sutent both have fearful side effects, the side effect doubled and almost killed him, and I know nothing about kidney cancer at that time.
did you have your surgery? and did the radiation therapy shrink your tumour? I think Sutent is the best targeted cancer drug for kidney cancer at the moment, and Afinitor(everolimus) just aproved by FDA as a backup.

Here are some articles about Sutent and cancer pain.

    Hi all,

My mom(67 years old) had a radical nephrectomy on her left kidney 5 years ago. Now,she had another surgey (Partial Nephrectomy) and Dr. removed part of her right kidney(about 10% he said) with tumor. diagnosed as Renal cell Carcinoma stage III. The previous staging was II. However in pathalogy test it’s mentioned that the tumor breaches to the hilar fat of kidney! but no invasion to any organ and it was clear cell carcinoma. I don’t know why they staged it III while it’s not metastased to any organ! anyways, she is very weak after suregry …Does any body know that how long is the chance of survival in this case(recuurence of RCC)?

any help and similar experience would be appreciated to share…

    Thanks

@hath, Hi, actually you can find all the answers you need on this site.
    AJCC stage III – T1-2, N1, M0 or T3a-c, N0-1, M0
    M0 – No distant metastasis

    resource: http://www.beatrcc.com/2009/07/a-simple-rcc-staging-form

At stage 3 the kidney cancer survival rate begins to diminish because the cancer would have spread to the nearby lymph nodes, the survival rate drops to 40 – 70% for 5 years.

    resource: http://www.beatrcc.com/2009/07/kidney-cancer-survival-rates

BUT, the situations vary from patient to patient.

I beat RCC with a vaccine still awaiting FDA approval called Trovax. With any luck it will soon be approved and provide hope for more people.

    Ken,

As a two year survivor of pRCC, I am glad to find your site. I lost my father in 1974 to pancreatic cancer and my mother in 1987 to lung cancer. Obviously I should have suspected I would get some form of cancer! I was lucky to be only stage 1, but it was nothing more than luck. My cancer was found because my liver enzymes were up (fatty liver), so my doctor insisted they do an ultrasound. No liver issue, but 4 cm pRCC (type II) tumor found on upper pole of left kidney. A few weeks later it was removed and I have been OK since, except for the occasional bout with fear it will be back.

I am sorry for your loss of your father to this horrible disease. His fate could easily have been mine. I hope they are able to discover a blood marker for RCC and all other forms of cancer.

And thanks for having this website for all of us to visit.

    Hi Ken,

I have stage 4 RCC and have had it for about 6 years. I’m still hanging in there and started Sutent about 3 months ago. This is the first drug I have taken for the RCC. I wanted to start raising money for RCC research and started http://www.kureit.org about 3 years ago. So far we have raised about $500,000 dollars. I expect to raise about a $1,000,000 per year in the next 2 or 3 years through friends, fundraisers and my industry. I hope you check it out and consider putting it as a link. I plan to do the same. Please feel free to reach out to me via email. Barry
