Approves Torisel(Wyeth Pharmaceuticals), a New Drug for the Treatment of late stage Kidney Cancer
First targeted cancer treatment shown to help these patients live longer The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Torisel™ (temsirolimus), a novel therapy for the treatment of patients with the advanced form of renal cell carcinoma, which is the most common type of kidney cancer. In a recent study, doctors found that patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma who received Torisel lived 49 percent longer – an average of 3.6 months – than patients who received a treatment called interferon-alpha. Torisel is the only marketed cancer therapy that inhibits a protein called mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin). mTOR is a key protein in cells that regulates cell proliferation, cell growth and cell survival. The American Cancer Society estimates that 51,190 new cases of kidney cancer will be diagnosed this year. Nearly twice as many men as women are affected, and the incidence is highest among people ages 50 to 70. More than 40 percent of patients with kidney cancer are diagnosed with advanced disease. Patients diagnosed with kidney cancer with distant metastatic disease have a five-year survival rate of less than 10 percent. Although Torisel is not a cure, it may give patients with advanced kidney cancer valuable extra time.
SUTENT transforms renal cell carcinoma fight
Canadians living with advanced kidney cancer now have a new treatment option. Health Canada has now approved SUTENT for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma.
My father has taken SUTENT for 18 days, his side-effects include:
Fatigue (most common side-effect) and weakness.
Mild rash (no tickle, and mostly disappear in hours)
Mouth sores (like i said in another post, those sores can be cured by smearing honey on it in some cases by if it is serious, you will need professional medcince.)
Nausea, vomiting and asitia ( since 5 days ago, he is using Interluken-2 at the same time, so the side-effects doubles, I’m asking his doctor if it’s possible to remove Interluken-2, i think that should not be a problem.) actually this is a very serious problem, patients must try their best to eat as much as they can. my father’s weight down to 155lbs, from 170lbs in around 4 weeks. asitia is also caused by taste changes (for example from salty to bitter) – another side – effect of SUTENT.
Low fever started couple of days ago.
other side-effect like Low blood counts is very common as well, lots of other RCC patients have this side-effect as well, but haven’t appeared on my father’s case.
